Highland Ranch was first settled in the late 1800s, most notably by the so-called Potato King, Rufus Clark, on a 160-acre homestead where the Highlands Ranch Golf Club sits today. The 22,000-acre master-planned community of Highlands Ranch started development in 1981 and has become one of the most desirable areas in the country to live in. Although often considered a city of its own, Highlands Ranch is actually an unincorporated community in Douglas County.

Population is roughly 105,631 according to a 2019 census and one can find any kind of residence from apartments and condominiums to custom-built, expansive ranch estates and active retirement communities.
